Job Spotter App Review Earn for Taking Pics of Help Wanted Signs.jpg

Back in college, I had to earn a bit of extra cash to augment my daily allowance, plus get some beer money because I could never ask my parents for that! I would make it a habit to walk around campus, keeping my eyes peeled for a help wanted poster I could respond to so that I could start working part-time. Whenever I would see a now hiring sign, I would either write down the information with a ballpoint pen on the palm of my hand (if I didn’t have a piece of paper - which I usually didn’t), or if I had nothing on me at all, I would just rip the entire sign off the post or wall for future reference.

Today, those job wanted signs and posters can be recorded with a simple click of your phone. Plus, they can actually become a source of income for you and me! Thanks to smartphone technology and the innovation of job seeker platforms, we can now help those looking for jobs and those who need people for their businesses - and get paid for doing so! Sounds like a good and legit deal, or something scammy? Let’s investigate together.

First things first - what is it?

The Job Spotter app (linked below for both iOS and Android users) is under the Indeed umbrella. Indeed is a recruitment platform that helps employers find employees, and job seekers to find jobs.

Basically, you have to download it and, as the name implies, look for those help wanted or any kind of hiring poster or sign in your area (campuses are always a good place to start!). Then you have to take photos of those signs, submit them using the app (following the app’s rules, of course), and sit back, relax, and start collecting points to redeem for gift cards!

How long has it been around?

Its mother company, Indeed, was founded way back in 2004. The Job Spotter app looks relatively newer (established around 2016 according to the app pages info).

Is registration free?

Yes, signing up is totally free, and only requires downloading the app, and then setting up your Job Spotter account using your name and a verifiable email address.

How do I start earning extra income from Job Spotter?

First, make sure to thoroughly read and understand the Job Spotter content submission guideline to avoid wasting time and effort submitting pictures that are unacceptable. The site throws in some acceptable submissions on this page filled with picture examples to give you a good idea of what to submit. Basically, you would want to take as clear a picture as possible of both the help wanted sign, plus the establishment that posted that sign. Avoid taking pictures with people in it, and keep your eyes peeled for those kinds of signs that you know aren’t as nearly as visible as mass-produced ones from chain establishments. These are the ones that Indeed considers the most useful for job seekers that are in your area. There is no limit to the number of original submissions you can muster, although duplicates will be flagged (if you aren’t the only one who has submitted the same sign and establishment). You really have to be discerning about the kind of help wanted signs and posters to take pictures of. Then you can start to earn gift cards from Amazon per approved submission.

Does it pay well?

Job Spotter has a rewards points and prizes system that allows users to earn up to 150 points per submission, depending on their algorithm. Once a submission is approved, you can already claim the gift card of your choice via the Wallet page. Gift cards are processed within two weeks, although some submissions might take longer to process and approve.

As to it paying well - honestly, I think it depends on a lot of circumstances. For starters, it doesn’t pay in cash, which I already find vexing, although gift cards are always welcome substitutes. For another, depending on your location, you might not be able to come across a lot of those hiring signs and posters to be able to rack up enough points to make it worth your while.

The verdict?

Overall, feedback from the apps page is good, with ratings averaging 4.3 stars from both Android and iOS users (as of this writing at least). It’s a user-friendly app and platform that allows me to explore my town and get some exercise along with my side hustle. I think this one is legit and is worth a shot, even though it won’t earn you enough to replace the income from steadier, more dependable tasks like taking surveys.

So I signed up with JobSpotter before I saw this Job Spotter review in the forum. I know I keep saying I like getting paid in cash, but Amazon GCs - for me and my family at least - are practically as good as cash since we use them all the time! At any rate, here is my take on my slightly-over-a-month-long gig from Job Spotter so far:

I suddenly noticed all the hiring signage in my city!

Yup, that’s what monetizing tasks does for a person looking for a side hustle, haha! When before, I would drive or bike around town with nary a glance at the help wanted sign on the wall or post I pass by, now I keep swiveling my head for them! At the very least, JobSpotter has kept me on my toes and made me more observant, so I will consider that a benefit.

Now ours isn’t the kind of town frequented by corporate types, so I was pleasantly surprised to find those small businesses like beauty salons and vaping shops (I KNOW, RIGHT?) seem to always be in need of serious employment. In a single week, I think I managed to take at least five pics of help wanted signs within a three-block radius.

(Most of them are still pending approval so I think I’m not the only Job Spotter-spotter in my city, which is a bummer haha.)

I like walking or biking around the city!

I know I should be talking about how much in Amazon gift cards I’ve made thus far (okay, fine, it’s a little under $10), but I want to underline the fact that I’m really having fun being on Job Spotter. I feel like I’m helping people out, plus I’ve gotten my son in on the action as well! He hasn’t signed up, mind, but since his eyes are sharper than his old man’s, I’ve really upped my game since he joined me on my JobSpotter walkabouts.

So it’s true what you said - this won’t take the place of a steadier job, but it sure is a fun way to bond with your friends and family members while making money on the side (and getting to know your city’s small businesses along the way!).

I love this little app! I started using Job Spotter App about seven months ago. A close friend of mine referred this to me, and because he himself is a user of this app, I knew it then that this is a legit app that can help me earn gift certificates. I earn points just by taking pictures of help wanted signs and uploading the images using the app. I live in a city where there is a lot of people that are using Job Seeker, so this is perfect for me. I often use my points for Amazon gift certificates. What I don't like on the other side is that it takes so long to receive the rewards because submissions are processed and take up to 8 days to be approved. Once it's approved it will take up to two weeks to process the rewards.
But still, I am happy about this app because of the idea that I am helping other people. Will continue to recommend this app!

Hey I really like my Jobspotter app! As you said it doesn’t augment my regular income but it’s great for when holidays and special occasions come around such as when family members are having a birthday and i am a bit strapped for cash. GC’s to the rescue!!! I actually stumbled upon it by accident when i myself was looking around our neighborhood for hiring posters and ads to see about a new job when i saw a high school friend snapping pics of signs using her smartphone. When i asked her all about it she told me she was using the Jobspotter app to earn some Amazon gift cards and i was sold! So yeah it was a pretty meta moment hahaha but here i am today still benefitting from that eureka moment and knowing which establishments in my areas are often looking to hire new staff and whatnot. I guess if i am to give a tip to jobspotter users here is to talk to some of the staff in restaurants, diners and other shops and see how the usual employment turnover is in their establishment to give you an idea if they will be putting out want ads soon.
